A fitness room featuring aerobic machines is typically only 1,200 square feet in area. The National Institute of Building Sciences recommends that a complete workout center that accommodates about 4,000 people should have a total of just over 7,000 square feet.
More than 64 percent of health club members report being a member of a club with about 7,000 square feet, as of 2014.
A room designed for fitness instruction should be about 1,200 square feet. For weight and exercise station rooms, the recommended square footage is 960 square feet. Fitness centers generally require a 12-foot ceiling throughout the facility to accommodate equipment usage.
