What Do Australians Eat?

Although Australian cuisine is very diverse and includes many dishes from different cultures, some familiar foods that are popular in Australia are Vegemite, Anzac biscuits, meat pies, chips and fish, fairy bread, grilled meats, Tim Tams and hamburgers with beetroot. Vegemite on toast is very well-known as a typical food associated with Australia.

Vegemite is actually a salty paste produced from yeast extract, which is served on toast. Australians eat different types of barbecue meats, including pork, beef and sausages. Kangaroo and emu meat are also served in different forms like grilled kangaroo and emu meat pies.

Typical snacks include Anzac biscuits, Tim Tams and fairy bread. Anzac biscuits are an oat and coconut cookie while fairy bread is buttered white bread coated with colored sprinkles. Tim Tams are chocolate cookies that contain a filling.

One of the most popular foods is hamburger with beetroot. Australians eat millions of hamburgers annually. However, other dishes found in Australia are associated with Chinese, Indian, Japanese and Thai cultures.
