There are numerous applications with the ability to open PNG files, including Apple Preview, Safari, Microsoft Paint and Adobe Photoshop. Mac users can open PNG files with Apple Preview and Safari, while Windows users can use Microsoft Paint. Both operating systems can use Adobe Photoshop to open PNG files.
Other suitable applications include Gimp and Adobe Illustrator. PNG is a graphics format that incorporates increased color support over the GIF format. Unlike GIF, however, PNG files cannot be animated. Screenshots taken with Mac OS X 10.4 and above, as well as Ubuntu Linux, are saved in the PNG format for default.
