MedicineNet.com indicates that Advil and ibuprofen are the same thing. Ibuprofen is the generic name of the medication, while Advil is a brand of ibuprofen. Motrin and Nuprin are two other brands of ibuprofen.

Drugs.com explains that ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication that reduces the hormones that create pain and inflammation in the body. Ibuprofen is useful in reducing fevers as well as alleviating inflammation and discomfort associated with headaches, menstrual cramps, arthritis, back pain and minor injury.

According to Advil’s official website, the drug comes in several forms, including tablets, caplets, gel capsules and liqui-gels. There is a fast-acting version as well as a version designed specifically for treating migraines. Each unit of Advil contains 200 milligrams of ibuprofen.
