The screen size of 55-inch television with a widescreen, 16:9 aspect ratio is 47.94 inches wide by 26.96 inches tall. The actual dimensions of a television depend on the housing containing the screen and electronics. For example, a cathode ray tube television has significantly more depth than a flat-screen television.

Manufacturers measure the size of a television screen using a diagonal, corner-to-corner method. A 4:3 aspect ratio affects the calculation that determines the width and height of the screen, resulting in screen dimensions of 44 inches wide by 33 inches tall for a 55-inch television. Speakers and control panels increase the overall dimensions of a television. The stand of a flatscreen television also increases overall height when it is free-standing rather than wall-mounted.
