American writer Jean Auel has written six books, as of 2015, but is interested in writing a seventh in the future. Auel started the Earth's Children series of six novels with "The Clan of the Cave Bear," which appeared in 1980 and spawned a 1986 film adaptation.
"The Clan of the Cave Bear" and its sequels are prehistoric fiction about Ayla, a Cro-Magnon orphan with light-colored hair and eyes who grows up among Neanderthals with dark hair and eyes, but wants to find others who look like her. In the books, Ayla invents face cream and sewing needles, tames a lion and finally marries a Cro-Magnon man. Auel published the sixth novel in 2011.
