The 12 signs of the Western zodiac, in order, are as follows: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. In addition to this basic ordering, each sign is attributed specific sets of calendar dates, ruling planets, associated numbers, qualities, elements and gemstones. Consideration of all these points ultimately contributes to a person’s astrological profile.

The commonly set specific dates for each sign are: Aries, March 21 to April 19; Taurus, April 20 to May 20; Gemini, May 21 to June 21; Cancer, June 22 to July 22; Leo, July 23 to Aug. 22; Virgo, Aug. 23 to Sept. 22; Libra, Sept. 23 to Oct. 23; Scorpio, Oct. 24 to Nov. 20; Sagittarius, Nov. 21 to Dec. 20; Capricorn, Dec. 23 to Jan. 20; Aquarius, Jan. 21 to Feb. 21; Pisces, Feb. 22 to March 20.

While these are usually the assigned dates, it is important to note that formal astrological calendars depend on the movement of the sun, a phenomenon which varies from year to year. Thus, the dates listed above best serve as approximations rather than ironclad certainties. Aside from their unique profiles, each sign is also placed in one of four elemental subdivisions, independent of order in time. The Fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius; Air signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius; Earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn; and Water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.
