A uniform resource locator is a type of uniform resource identifier and is the protocol used for referencing online addresses. The URL address is formatted with the protocol “http://” and a domain name.

Because the Internet is home to a variety of content, a URI is utilized to identify videos, text pages, animation or sound clips. The most familiar type of URI is the URL. A URI then generally describes a component utilized to access an online resource, the computer on which the reference is contained, the name of the computer file and the URL or website address.

The “http://” or hypertext transfer protocol makes it possible for the browser to establish the protocol being used to gain entry to data that is defined in a particular domain.
