A standalone operating system is complete and works on a notebook or desktop computer. Standalone systems include DOS, Mac OS, Unix, Linux and OS/2 Warp Client. Windows standalones include Windows 3.x, Windows 95, Windows NT Workstation, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP Home and Professional editions.
There are also network operating systems that support a network. A network is a group of computers and/or devices connected via communication media through cables, modems and telephone lines. Network operating systems include NetWare, Unix, Linux, Solaris and OS/2 Warp Server for E-business. Windows network systems include Windows 2000 Server, Windows NT server and Windows.NET Server
