To unfreeze a DVD player or drive when it freezes, restart the device or manually open the disc drive to determine the problem. Most DVD players have a button that allows the drive to be opened without a source of power. It takes 10 to 15 minutes to unfreeze a DVD player depending on the device.

  1. Restart the device

Turn the DVD player completely off and unplug it from the wall outlet. Leave unplugged for 30 seconds to 1 minute, then plug it back in and turn on the power.

  2. Locate the manual eject button

If the DVD player still freezes, turn it off again and look for the manual eject button on the device. It is typically a small hole located directly beneath the DVD tray.

  3. Remove and check the DVD

Using a paper clip or a safety pin, press the manual eject button to open the DVD tray while the power is off. Inspect the DVD for scratches, deformities or label damage.

  4. Test a different DVD or disc

Turn the DVD player back on with a different disc inside. If the DVD player continues to freeze, there may be a problem with the DVD player which may require a device replacement.
