Do Wind Chimes Scare Away Birds?

While loud wind chimes might scare away birds, soft wind chimes may actually encourage birds to investigate due to their natural curiosity. Water splashes, bird chatter and insect buzzing may also attract birds. Sounds that deter birds include loud noises, music, talking, predator noises and excessive use of bird calls.

A bird’s hearing is especially developed, as it is key in avoiding predators and finding sources of food and water. The ears of a bird are funnel shaped and surrounded by sensitive auricular feathers. Although birds are able to hear much finer degrees of pitch, rhythm and tone, their ears cannot always detect as wide a range of frequencies as human ears.
