Seagulls, also known as herring gulls, make sounds that sound like mew, keow or ha-ha-ha-ha, in order to ward of predators or attract the attention of other nearby seagulls. Both females and males make a huoh-huoh-huoh sound for nest selection, territorial disputes and courtship.
Overall, seagulls use a variety of strange and unique sounds to communicate with each other. The chicks will beg for regurgitated food by making a klee-ew sound, while adult male seagulls use the same call when returning to a nest or during courtship. Belonging to the Laridae family, there are more than 50 different known species of seagulls around the world.
