Katydids are large green flying insects with leaf-like wings. The wings are oval and covered with veins that resemble those found on leaves. Adult katydids are over 2 inches long. These insects are related to crickets and grasshoppers.
The size of katydids' wings vary by species. Some are quite small, but tropical katydids have wingspans of about 8 inches. In general, katydids are not adept at flying. Some travel through the air for limited distances, and certain species are unable to fly. They move by walking, climbing and making short jumps. Katydids are found in many parts of the world, including rain forests, deciduous forests and fields.
