How Much Do Lions Eat?

Lions have been known to eat as much as 90 pounds of meat in a single sitting. Most of the time, the meals are much smaller, totalling around 11 pounds of meat a day.

Male lions usually stay back while the female lions do all of the hunting. Once a prey animal is taken down, male lions sometimes chase off the females and cubs and gorge themselves first. Their favored prey are zebra, antelope and buffalo. The typical lion makes around 15 kills a year and offsets this amount by eating carrion and animals killed by other members of the pride.
