The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) gives the average weight of an African elephant as 6 tons. The typical weight of an African elephant varies according to the animal’s gender and age.

According to San Diego Zoo, male African elephants weigh between 8,818-13,889 pounds whereas females are slightly smaller, weighing in at between 5,291-7,716 pounds. This enormous weight makes African elephants the largest animals that live on land. The average baby African elephant weighs around 198-265 pounds at birth. Elephants grow continuously, with males reaching a weight of around 11,023 pounds by the age of 50 or 60 years.
