How Many Gray Wolves Are Left in the World?
Although it is impossible to know exactly, there are probably between 150,000 and 200,000 gray wolves in the world, with the majority of them living in Canada and the United States. Approximately 50,000 gray wolves live in Canada alone.
Approximately 5,000 wolves live in the United States. Most live in Alaska, which has between 7,700 and 11,200 wolves, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Other large populations live in the northern Rocky Mountains and the Great Lakes region. Large populations can be found throughout parts of Europe and Asia, especially Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkey and Mongolia. Although the gray wolf is not an endangered species as a whole, it is endangered in some regions and is the focus of reintroduction efforts in places like the southwestern United States.
