The umbilical cord dries up and falls off a puppy within 2 to 3 days after birth. The birthing location should be clean and sanitary in order to avoid the risk of the umbilical cord becoming infected. It is best to crush the cord rather than to cut it clean.
The cord should be severed so as to leave a half an inch section attached to the puppy. Tie the severed end of the cord with a clean piece of dental floss or thread in order to prevent bleeding. After a time, dip the end of the cord in a shallow dish of Iodine to prevent infection.
