How Long After a Second Vaccination Can a Puppy Go Out?
A puppy should be fully protected from its second vaccination and able to go out approximately 7 to 10 days after its second vaccination. It is important to wait until the puppy has full protection before allowing it to socialize, because of the dangers of diseases.
However, it is also important that puppies are properly socialized. As soon as the puppy is fully protected, its owners should begin the socialization process. Every puppy needs to know how to conduct itself around other animals and humans so interaction is necessary. Remember that puppies need to experience new things slowly though and start with small experiences building up to larger, more intense experiences.
The first vaccination for a puppy typically begins after the maternal immunity is lost. Puppies get antibodies, just like humans, from their mothers that begin going away approximately 6 weeks after birth. The puppy will then get the first vaccination at 8 weeks of age and a second at 10 weeks of age. The third will be administered at 16 weeks of age.
A dog will need to be vaccinated throughout its life to help avoid problem diseases such as parvovirus, hepatitis and distemper. These vaccinations are typically given 1 year after the puppy’s three vaccination series and then every 3 years after that.
