What Is the Lifespan of a Love Bug?

After it becomes an adult, the typical lifespan of a male love bug is two to five days, but a female can live for up to seven days. Males usually die shortly after mating with a female. The female quickly lays eggs after mating and then dies shortly afterward.

Males can mate with multiple females, but the mating process takes hours and is too exhausting for most. Birds and other predators, insecticides, and car windshields all contribute to abbreviated lives for many love bugs. It takes three to nine months for love bugs to go through their larval and pupal stages.
