Brian Griffin, the talking dog and member of the Griffin family in the "Family Guy" animated series, is a white Labrador retriever. Labrador Retrievers are medium-sized working dogs that, according to the American Kennel Club, are the most popular dog breed in the United States.
Brian Griffin was among the original main cast that appeared in the "Family Guy" pilot episode entitled "Death Has a Shadow," which was broadcast January 31, 1999. Brian's character is depicted as a white Labrador who happens to be an intellectual writer, who possesses a dry humor and shares a close friendship with the youngest Griffin family member, Stewie.
Often shown drinking a martini, Brian also hangs out with the main character Peter Griffin and his friends Joe, Quagmire and Cleveland drinking at the Drunken Clam. Brian's relationship with Stewie, however, is featured prominently in a good part of the "Family Guy" series. Many episodes center on their adventures in a wide range of settings, such as World War II-era England, the Middle East and even in multi-dimensional universes.
Brian's character was killed in the season 12 episode entitled "Life of Brian" which aired on November 31, 2013. In the episode, Brian was struck by a reckless driver while setting up a hockey net and Stewie wasn't able to fix his time machine to save Brian's life. Brian's character was brought back 2 weeks later in the episode entitled "Christmas Guy."
