Do Grasshoppers Bite?
Last Updated Apr 14, 2020 1:41:47 AM ET

Grasshoppers are not known for biting though they may occasionally bite a predator as a defense mechanism. Although grasshoppers have very strong jaws for tearing vegetation, they prefer jumping away to avoid capture rather than confronting predators.
Grasshoppers have been on the Earth for more than 200 million years. Grasshoppers are excellent jumpers and can travel up to 200 times their body length when they jump. Some grasshopper species can fly and may travel in large groups. These large groups often migrate in search of food and can fly nonstop for up to three days at a time. Grasshoppers have large appetites, often eating more than twice their weight in food each day.
