A female parrot is called a hen. For some kinds of parrots, it’s difficult to tell one sex from another just by looking at them.
In some parrot species, the hen and the cock are so different that scientists first believed they were different species. For instance, the male Eclectus parrot is green all over, but the hen has a startling red head with a brown and red-violet body.
Parrots are native to the tropical and sub-tropical zones of the world and are noted for their often bright-colored plumage. Many types of parrots are kept as pets, and some can mimic human sounds.
