According to Dogtime, there are two types of hound dogs, known as sight hounds and scent hounds. Sight hounds are dogs known to be fast and run after anything in motion. Scent hounds are known to wander away to follow a certain scent.

With a lot of commitment and training, scent hounds can also become great search and rescue dogs. Some owners tend to create tracking games for their hounds. Placing treats outside for the hound to find can be a great tool for training hounds. Participating in search events or even walking away to leave a scent trail for the dog to follow assists in training.

Hounds are dogs that were bred to be independent and make up their own minds. Though hounds can be trained, they usually hesitate to obey commands and require a lot of patience. All hounds need to be walked on a leash and kept in a secure yard to keep them from running away. According to the American Kennel Club, hounds share the common trait of being used as hunting dogs. Some hounds also share the common skill of creating a sound called baying. They are known as one of the oldest hunting dogs. Hound dogs are available in a variety of breeds, such as Beagles and Greyhounds.
