Why Do Chihuahuas Lick so Much?

A Chihuahua may engage in excessive licking behavior as a form of affection or because of an unresolved health issue. Like most dogs, Chihuahuas use licking as a form of personal expression. To find out the specific reason for the licking, an owner can monitor the behavior closely or consult a veterinarian.

Some Chihuahuas develop the habit of excessively licking either people or objects such as furniture. While licking is a normal behavioral trait among all dog breeds, it can also be a sign of a deeper issue. Certain health-related problems may be the cause. For instance, the dog may have a dental problem such as bad teeth or gum disease. Because the dog cannot speak, it uses licking as a way of coping with discomfort.

Another health-related cause behind too much licking is obsessive-compulsive disorder. This is a disorder that causes compulsive behavior. The compulsion to lick could be triggered by a hidden psychological issue. The only way to find out for sure if the licking is connected to a persistent health problem is to bring the pet to a trained veterinarian.

If health issues are ruled out, a change of diet may help to reduce the amount of licking.
