What Are the Characteristics of a Maltipoo?

The maltipoo, a breed of dog created by mixing a Maltese and a miniature poodle, is known to be affectionate and playful. This type of dog maintains its puppy disposition and its puppy-like looks throughout most of its life. Because this is a new breed of hybrid dog, as of August 2014, it is not recognized by any official kennel clubs.

Maltipoos are friendly and people-oriented dogs. They average 8 to 14 inches in height and 5 to 15 pounds in weight. They are great family pets, but because of their small size, they should only be kept indoors. Also because of their small size, they do better in a home with older children that know how to gently handle and play with them. Maltipoos are known to be noisy barkers, but with proper training, this habit can be manageable.

A maltipoo’s coat tends to be slightly scruffy. Even though they are minimal shedders, maltipoos do require some maintenance grooming. Maltipoos are one of the few dog breeds that are said to be hypoallergenic. On average, a maltipoo lives to an age of approximately 11 years old, which is below average when compared to other breeds of dog, large or small.
