Bullet ants live throughout the rainforests of Central America and South America. They can be found from Nicaragua in the north to Bolivia and Brazil in the south.
Within their habitat, bullet ant colonies can be found in shrubs or the canopy of trees, but they are most often found in the soil at the base of large trees. Bullet ant colonies contain a few hundred individual ants. Bullet ants are the largest of the ant species, growing up to 1 inch long. Bullet ants are known for their excruciatingly painful and toxic sting. The venom contains a neurotoxin that inhibits the body's ability to control muscle contractions, and the symptoms last up to 24 hours.
