In the 1982 adaptation of the story of "Annie," which was initially adapted from a comic book series called "Little Orphan Annie," Annie’s dog Sandy was played by a 6-year-old otterhound named Bingo. A golden retriever-chow mix named Marti plays Sandy in the 2014 “Annie” movie.
In the first "Annie" film adaptation, Sandy was given a larger role than he previously had in the Broadway versions of the musical. In this version, Annie saves Sandy from a gang of boys who are torturing him in addition to rescuing him from the dog catcher.
The dog that was cast to play Annie's dog Sandy in the 2014 film was adopted from a shelter in New York, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). The film shows Annie and her adoptive father, Daddy Warbucks, adopting Sandy from a shelter, mirroring the way in which Daddy Warbucks rescued Annie from an orphanage. Sandy features in several scenes in the film and can be recognized by her tan fur and pointy ears.
