Kodiak bears and grizzlies are subspecies of brown bears. A large male Kodiak is approximately 10 feet upright and 5 feet on all fours. Females are substantially smaller. The largest bears live in coastal British Columbia, Alaska and the Kodiak Archipelago. Kodiaks are carnivores, but their diet consists mainly of nuts, berries, fruit, leaves and roots. Kodiaks, despite their enormous size, run at a speed of 30 mph. They are dangerous to humans if surprised, or when cubs are present.
