What Is a Baby Buffalo Called?
A baby buffalo is called a calf. They’re orange or light brown at birth and stand immediately following birth, although their distinctive hump is undeveloped and they have no horns. Calves nurse up to nine months but eat grass during the first month. Buffalo calves live in families called herds.
African buffaloes share similar traits with the American bison. Both species are bovines, chew cud and eat plants. The American bison is the largest buffalo in North America with wild populations on the plains, the prairies and in river valleys within national parks and refuges. African buffalo inhabit savannas, woodlands and rain forests. There are numerous species of the African buffalo, including cape and water, each with different habitat preferences.
