The average weight of a male African lion is about 420 pounds. Male lions are significantly larger than females, which weigh in at an average of 280 pounds.
Males are instantly recognizable by their large manes, the much longer hair that encircles their heads. A male typically lives with up to two other males, up to a dozen females and their young cubs, a group known as a pride. While females are the primary hunters of the group, males are responsible for defending the pride's territory, which may include up to 100 square miles of grasslands, open woodlands or scrub.
