How Do You Make Homemade Moss Killer?

Mix dishwashing detergent with water to make a homemade moss killer. Spray moss with this solution during cool or warm weather to control moss. Reapply the solution at regular intervals to eliminate moss.

  1. Make the solution

Mix 4 ounces of liquid dish soap and 1 gallon of water in a 1- to 2-gallon hand sprayer. Gently shake the container to make a homogeneous solution.

  2. Spray moss with the solution

Hold the spray nozzle of the hand sprayer a couple of inches away from the moss. Spray moss with the solution. After spraying, the moss turns brown or orange within 24 hours and eventually dries out.

  3. Remove stubborn moss

If moss persists, apply the solution at 14-day intervals. Continue to reapply the solution for four to six applications. Drench moss with a more concentrated solution if moss persists after six applications.

  4. Prevent moss from reoccurring

Spraying moss with a soap solution offers temporary relief. Address underlying issues that are causing moss for a permanent solution to the problem. Have the soil tested, and adjust the pH levels if necessary to reduce conditions that favor moss growth. Prune trees that give excessive shade, and ensure that the lawn drains properly to permanently remove moss.
