Does Linen Shrink When Washed?

Linen made of natural fibers usually shrinks between 4 and 10 percent when washed for the first time. If the linen is washed or dried at high temperatures, the amount of shrinkage may exceed 10 percent.

There are pre-shrunk linens available on the market, and these can be fully shrunk or partially shrunk when sold. Bella Lino, a luxury linen company, suggests cleaning linens separately from other clothing material types, especially polyester, which can affect the softness of the linen. Washing the linen with clothing that has buttons or zippers can damage delicate linens. It is also suggested to use gentle detergents without whitening or bluing agents.
