Which Countries Have Autocracy Governments?
The number of autocracies in the world varies between studies depending on their methodologies, but a core group of autocratic regimes appear across the most influential studies. These include Cuba, Belarus, Eritrea, Syria, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, China, North Korea, Laos and Vietnam.
The 2014 Freedom in the World report published by Freedom House found 48 countries to be “not free,” while the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Democracy Index 2013 found 55 authoritarian states, although these numbers do not only include autocracies under the strictest sense of the word. The Polity IV data set uses a stricter definition and found 20 in 2011. The countries listed above are noted across all three as autocracies.
