How Many Days Early Can You Refill a Prescription?

A refill for a 30-day retail prescription can be refilled when there is no more than a 7-day supply remaining, and a 90-day prescription can be refilled when there is no more than a 14-day supply remaining, as stated by the North Carolina State Health Plan; however, this is a federal law that applies to all states. If a new prescription has a different dosage than the previous one, then this period is reset.

This federal law is designed to prevent prescription medication abuse; however, exceptions can be made in some circumstances, such as for those who are going on vacation. Those who require an exemption to be made will need to fill in a request ahead of time and get the request approved by the right authorities.
