According to the Royal Mint, the British 2p, or 2 pence, coin weighs 7.12 grams. This equals about 0.25 ounces. It has a diameter of 25.9 mm, or 1.01 inches.
The coin was made from 97 percent copper until 1992, when the rising price of the metal caused the Royal Mint to change the coin's composition to that of copper-plated steel. It was introduced on February 15, 1971, alongside the 1/2 pence coin and the 1 pence coin as part of a new decimal system for British currency. It is acceptable as payment for debts up to and including 20 pence.
