The software can be purchased on its own, or as part of a kit containing a laptop and a diagnostic adapter.
There are several types of Caterpillar engine fault codes. The CID, or component identifier, indicates that there is a problem with a specific component. FMI stands for failure mode identifier, and it shows what kind of failure occurred. The module identifier, or MID, shows which electronic control module has failed. The electronic control module keeps track of what happened during the malfunction, providing a detailed history to help diagnose and fix the problem.
