What Is a Quinary Sector?
The quinary sector is the branch of a country’s economy where high-level decisions are made by top-level executives in the government, industry, business, education, media and nonprofit organizations. The quinary sector is the top economic sector.
Economies are divided into sectors through a hierarchy that starts with the parts of the economy related to gathering and using raw material in the lowest sectors and moves up from there. The primary sector collects raw materials and produces food. The secondary sector of the economy creates consumer-ready products through manufacturing and construction. The tertiary sector provides services, such as sales, entertainment, transportation and health care. The quaternary sector includes the government, education, libraries and culture. The quinary sector grows out of the leadership of the quaternary sector. Not all societies have all sectors.
