The amount of postage required to mail a CD depends on how it is packaged, with the least expensive method requiring the 2-ounce letter rate, or 70 cents, as of 2014. Heavier and thicker packaging materials could require the first class package rate of $2.32.

For the 70-cent, 2-ounce letter rate, the CD should be packaged in a 6-inch by 9-inch bubble wrap envelope. This size is within the maximum postal dimensions for a letter. It is no heavier than 2 ounces and no thicker than 1/4 inch. For extra protection, the CD can be wrapped in cereal-box grade cardboard and mailed in the 6-inch by 9-inch envelope for the 2-ounce letter rate plus a 21-cent surcharge, resulting in total postage of 91 cents, as of 2014. Heavier packaging involving a thickness of more than 1/4-inch requires first class parcel rates of $2.32 for up to 3 ounces, as of 2014.
