The McDonald’s Corporation has owned a few other companies. The corporation acquired other restaurant chains in the 1990s, but has been divesting itself of many of these other brands to focus on the growth of the McDonald’s brand.

In 1999, McDonald’s bought Donatos Pizza from its owner, Jim Grote, but sold the company back to him in 2003. McDonald’s began investing in Chipotle Mexican Grill in 1998 and eventually owned a majority stake, but it fully divested from Chipotle in a 2006 stock exchange. McDonald’s acquired Boston Chicken, now known as Boston Market, in 2000, but sold the chain to Sun Capital Partners in 2007. Seed Restaurant Group and McDonald’s had a joint venture for Fazoli’s restaurants, but the joint venture was dissolved in 2003. McDonald’s developed the concept of Redbox in 2002, but Coinstar purchased McDonald’s stake in Redbox in 2009.
