A urologist specializes in diseases that affect the male reproductive organs. This type of doctor also aids both men and women with diseases affecting the urinary tract.

Doctors specializing in urology must have knowledge in a variety of medical specialties, including internal medicine, gynecology and pediatrics. This is a surgical subspecialty and those with advanced surgical qualifications may belong to the American College of Surgeons. There are multiple subspecialties in urology including male infertility and erectile dysfunction. Doctors may also choose to only work with female urology, pediatric urology or kidney transplant patients.
