What Does the Human Resources Department Do?

The human resources department functions to maintain a high-performance workforce and ensure compliance with laws and regulations, according to the University of Rhode Island. It has a strategic plan to ensure the company has the best available employees to fulfill company goals, oversee employee performance and support the company’s culture.

According to Entrepreneur, some of the duties of the human resources department include managing payroll and benefits and hiring and firing employees. According to the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, this department is also responsible for classifying positions and determining salary. It handles employee performance reviews and manages workers compensation claims. It also maintains personnel records and database information.
