Home Depot was incorporated as a company in 1978 and opened its first two stores in downtown Atlanta in 1979. The founders' vision was to build home improvement mega-stores that were larger than those of their competitors. The first corporate office was on Terrell Mill Road in Marietta, Ga. Construction on the headquarters in Cumberland was completed in 1997. It is a modern 21-floor high-rise office building built primarily of concrete and glass.
Home Depot is the largest home retailer in the world and the fourth-largest retailer in the United States. As of 2014, it has more than 2,260 worldwide retail stores, with almost 2,000 outlets in the United States, 180 in Canada, 107 in Mexico and a few in China. Expansion into markets in South America and China were not profitable. In China, Home Depot discovered that the culture is not amenable to do-it-yourself projects, as manual labor is considered low-class.
