One simple way to see if the IRS has received your tax return, especially if you are anticipating a refund, is to use the IRS's "Where's My Refund" tool. The IRS updates refund statuses every 24 hours.
- Wait for your tax return to be received
Wait at least 24 hours if you file your tax return electronically before you check to see if it was received. If you mail your taxes via the postal service, wait at least four weeks before attempting to confirm its receipt. If you use tax preparation software, you may receive an email about the status of your return.
- Log into the "Where's My Refund?" tool
If enough time has passed and you have yet to hear about the status of your return, go to the IRS website and click on "Refunds." Have your Social Security Number on hand, as well as your filing status and the refund amount you expect to receive. Enter the information to check the status of your return.
- Use the IRS2GO mobile app
There's also a special IRS2GO mobile app that you can download to your Apple or Android phone for free. Enter the same information that you use for the regular online tool. With the mobile app, a special status tracker allows you to see the most up-to-date status of your return.
