The largest Walmart store is in Albany, New York and opened in 2008. There are approximately 23,000 stores around the country with an average size of 187,000 square feet while the store in Albany is almost 260,000 square feet.
The largest Walmart is two stories, featuring a supermarket on the first floor and the discount merchandise center on the top. The store was previously a Sam's Club location that closed in 2006. Walmart took the adjacent space to develop a giant supercenter. Walmart has utilized a shopping cart escalator to aid in shoppers moving between floors. The store is specifically located in the Crossgate Common's strip mall that is home to other chain retailers like Petsmart and The Home Depot.
