Also referred to as TPS, Tyler Perry Studios was founded by writer, director and actor Tyler Perry in 2006. Prior to moving to its current location in 2008, the studios were located at 99 Krog Street in Inman Park in central Atlanta.
Tyler Perry Studios encompasses more than 200,000 square feet of sets and office space. The premiere opening of the studios was attended by Oprah Winfrey, Sidney Poitier, Hank Aaron, Cicely Tyson and Will Smith, among others.
As of 2014, Tyler Perry Studios has released 14 stage plays, 16 movies, five TV series and two books. Many of the plays and movies revolve around the character Mabel “Madea” Simmons. As played by Tyler Perry, Madea is a sassy, pistol-packing, 70-year-old grandmother. Perry’s first movie, “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” grossed over $50 million dollars in theaters with a budget of just $5.5 million dollars. Its sequel, “Madea’s Family Reunion,” grossed $65 million.
