Are $2 Bills Still Being Made?
The U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing still produces $2 bills, according to MSN Money. They were first introduced in 1862, but production of $2 bills was suspended in 1966 due to their lack of popularity. Production started again in 1976 as part of the U.S. Bicentennial celebration.
Production runs of $2 bills are made every few years, depending on demand, says “The New York Times.” A run was initiated in October 2013. As of April 2014, one billion $2 bills were in circulation, making up just 3 percent of the total number of bills in circulation.
MSN Money notes that Alexander Hamilton’s portrait appeared on the original $2 bill. As of 2014, the $2 bill features Thomas Jefferson’s picture on the front and an image of John Trumbull’s painting “Declaration of Independence” on the back.
