They were first introduced in 1862, but production of $2 bills was suspended in 1966 due to their lack of popularity. Production runs of $2 bills are made every few years, depending on demand, says "The New York Times." A run was initiated in October 2013. As of April 2014, one billion $2 bills were in circulation, making up just 3 percent of the total number of bills in circulation.
