As of 2014, Zinedine Zidane is a Muslim, though he describes himself as non-practicing. He reportedly prays before games and was voted one of the top ten greatest Muslim athletes of all time by Complex, a New York-based bi-monthly magazine. He is married to Véronique Fernández, a Spanish Christian.
Zidane was born in 1972 in Marseille, France to Algerian immigrants. He started his football career by playing for local youth clubs. At 14 years old, his soccer skills caught the eye of Jean Varraud, an AS Cannes recruiter while playing at a French football federation training camp. He played as a member of the French team that won the World Cup in 1998.
