While it may sometimes seem that humanity is not heading in a positive direction, it is important to remember that people have been feeling this way for a long time and society has not collapsed yet. Barring a major disruption from nature, the world is likely to continue for quite some time.
Records indicate that complaints about the youth of the world stem back to as early as 6,000 BC. The youth being the future of civilization, many people worry when they see a generation that they view as out-of-control or undisciplined poised to take power in coming years. It may seem that the world is heading in a bad direction, but don't worry. Like Plato's time, odds are high that this fear is unfounded.
It seems that every generation goes through growing struggles that worry their parents and grandparents. Because this behavior has been continuing for at least 8,000 years, it is fair to say that it does not indicate that society is any closer to collapse than it has been at other times in history.
What should be of concern is that the problems started by generations before, such as pollution and financial instability, will have an effect on how well future generations will live once the older generations have passed.
