A volleyball net measures 36 feet wide from pole to pole. The net is 7 feet 11 5/8 inches high for men and 7 feet 4 1/8 inches high for women. The net measures 39 inches from top to bottom.

Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan who worked at the YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts. He took elements from other sports including basketball, handball and tennis for businessmen who wanted less physical activity than when playing basketball. It was originally called mintonette. An official volleyball was made in 1900. Volleyball was first played in the Olympics in Tokyo in 1964.
