For the symptoms of bruising and inflammation after an injury, the initial treatment is to ice or use a cold compress on the affected area. After the swelling has gone down, a warm compress or heat pack then can be utilized to help the bruise heal and fade, states WebMD.
Immediately after a bruise develops, cold compresses are used a few times a day for up to 48 hours, and then heat packs are applied several times a day after the 48 hours have passed. The bruises can heal in a few days, but may take some time to fade completely.
Another recommendation to treat bruises that are tender and hurt is to use an over-the-counter pain reliever. A home remedy is to use a small quantity of tincture of arnica on the bruise to help it heal, notes Dr. Weil.
